Sodium–Potassium Ratios for Sweat Replacement

Hydration is more than drinking water — it’s about replacing what’s lost.
Every drop of sweat during endurance exercise contains sodium and potassium, the body’s two critical electrolytes. Yet, many hydration supplements fail to reflect the real-world loss profile, especially in athletes training in heat or humidity.
As a contract manufacturer (CMO) specializing in sport supplements, BF-EssE helps brands formulate EU-compliant, evidence-based electrolyte products that work with the body's mineral physiology, not against it.

Why Sodium–Potassium Ratios Matter
In sweat:
  • Sodium dominates, typically at 800–1200 mg/L
  • Potassium appears at much lower levels, around 200–300 mg/L
Yet, many "hydration" products overcorrect with high potassium or low sodium, diluting performance benefits and impairing rehydration.
Ideal sodium: potassium ratio in sweat = 4:1 to 5:1
If your supplement doesn't match this — it’s not a real sweat replacer.

Regulatory Considerations (EU)

Sodium and potassium salts are allowed without novel food status
EFSA restricts health claims to basic physiological roles:
  • “Sodium contributes to normal muscle function”
  • “Potassium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system”
Use structure–function language, not disease-prevention
  • No “rehydration” or “electrolyte therapy” unless approved by clinical data or EFSA heath claims
